Bloomington real estate is probably best known for
its most recent attraction to put it on the map: The Mall of
America. Although Bloomington homes were well known long
before the MOA (as it's commonly referred to), this giant community
Mecca put it on the map for national attention.
Bloomington is actually one of the largest cities in MN behind only
Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Rochester. It is so large that is
traditionally broken up into two halves: East Bloomington and West
Bloomington as divided either north-south running Highway 35W. West
Bloomington in his typically held as more prestigious, academically
and economically, but it is East Bloomington that is really the
economic center for retail and business in Bloomington, housing the
Mall of America, bordering on the MSP international Airport and
containing the majority of what's known as the 494 strip, a strip of
highway lined back to back with hotels, restaurants and retail.
Geographically, Bloomington real estate sits directly south of
Minneapolis, separated only by Richfield and is the southeastern
most city in
Hennepin County. Bloomington realty was named by
its original settlers after their hometown of Bloomington, Illinois,
meaning "flowering field". In 1982 Twin Cities two major sports
teams (the Minnesota Twins baseball and the Minnesota Vikings
football) both left their Bloomington MN homes, as they moved to the
newly constructed Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome downtown Minneapolis.
Bloomington MN real estate was left with an enormous plot of
land in an ideal location easily accessible to both downtowns, the
international Airport and major Minnesota highways. It wasn't long
before a major developer bought this prime Bloomington Minnesota
real estate to form what is now the Mall of America, opened in 1992.
One year later, in 1993, the beloved Minnesota hockey team, The
Minnesota North stars, were relocated to Texas and the
Bloomington property adjacent to the Mall of America was now for
sale as well. A large portion of that Bloomington realty was
purchased by internationally known IKEA, much of the rest is
allocated to the Mall of America, part 2, including a large water
park, which opened in 2006 (the Water Park of America, ninth largest
in the US.)
